Current estimates show that this weekend is in fact the lowest grossing at the domestic box office year-to-date with around $54.7M for all films, lower than Super Bowl Weekend ($55.8M). How is that possible during a spring break with kids off?
The Columbus Film Office partnered with Georgia Entertainment at SXSW in March. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, SXSW is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of tech, film, music, education and culture.
Warner Bros. decided to take a big swing on his next outing at a higher budget level. Unfortunately for stakeholders, the result isn’t going to cut it profit-wise, given the original sci-fi film’s $118M cost (not counting P&A). 2025 has clicked past $1.08 billion (in fact it did last weekend), +11% over the same Jan. 1-March 2 frame a year ago, but this weekend is now coming in at $53.3M per Comscore, which would make it the lowest frame of the year to date, under Super Bowl
The real story of the weekend was Neon‘s The Monkey with a C+ CinemaScore (same as Oz Perkins’ Longlegs) and a 2 1/2 star PostTrak which notched a $14.2M opening, the second best for the distrib behind last July’s Longlegs ($22.4M) also from Perkins.

Rivals firmly believe that we have the first $100M opener on hand for 2025’s domestic B.O., and Disney believes that as well. Global opening is at $192.4M which is roughly $2M higher than where Nancy and I spotted it.
The challenge of the next generation of developers is to go beyond fun, to create something that stays with us long after we turn off the tv or get up off the couch.
