Weekend Box Office Results: ‘Mufasa’ Leads One Of The Lowest MLK Weekends In A Decade With $15M+

Not counting the 2021 pandemic year when all theaters were closed, it’s the second lowest MLK 4-day weekend of the last 10 years with the marketplace now estimated to do $96.3M. The last time it was this low was 2022 with $85M, and that’s when Paramount/Spyglass’ Scream led with a $33.8M Friday-Monday opening.

Weekend Box Office Results: First Weekend Of 2025 Heads To $105M+; ‘Mufasa’ Reigns With $23M+

The first weekend of 2025 — which sources have declared “a normal year” — is eyeing a grand estimated total of $105.5M for all movies, which is certainly better at +23% than the first weekend of 2024 which did $85.9M, per Box Office Mojo. Overall, it was a blasé frame of holiday carryovers without any new wide releases: one of three currently in 2025 along with Oct. 31 and Dec. 12.

Lion and land critter continued to go at like an episode of Mutual Omaha’s Wild Kingdom this weekend with each studio screaming that they’re No. 1. If you look at the standard 3-day weekend, it’s Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with $38M while Disney’s Mufasa is looking at an estimated $37M. However, on the five-day measure which saw The Lion King prequel rise from the dust on Christmas Day and Dec. 26 in its dailies, Mufasa takes the lead with $63.7M. 

Weekend Box Office Results: ‘Hedgehog’ Still Has Upper Claw Over ‘Mufasa’ With $62M+ In Pre-Christmas Frame

Who knew that hedgehogs were predatory creatures that could spring out of the ground and take down the king of the jungle in full? Paramount’s $122M production Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the dominant heading into the Christmas frame with a $62M opening, well ahead of Disney’s $200M prequel Mufasa which is nothing to sing ‘Hakuna Matata’ about with a $35M start.
