It’s bound to be one of the lowest overall grossing weekends of 2025 with around $70.2M for all movies, and there’s not even a snowstorm to blame. That’s how this part of the calendar typically swings at the box office. A year ago at this time, all titles counted $54.5M per Box Office Mojo, and that was the second worst weekend of 2024.
Not counting the 2021 pandemic year when all theaters were closed, it’s the second lowest MLK 4-day weekend of the last 10 years with the marketplace now estimated to do $96.3M. The last time it was this low was 2022 with $85M, and that’s when Paramount/Spyglass’ Scream led with a $33.8M Friday-Monday opening.
Later this week, Georgia Entertainment will hold its “From Script to Screen” event series at the 41st annual Sundance Film Festival. These activations will spotlight the state’s locations, studio facilities, incentives and world class suppliers supporting production in Georgia.

The first weekend of 2025 — which sources have declared “a normal year” — is eyeing a grand estimated total of $105.5M for all movies, which is certainly better at +23% than the first weekend of 2024 which did $85.9M, per Box Office Mojo. Overall, it was a blasé frame of holiday carryovers without any new wide releases: one of three currently in 2025 along with Oct. 31 and Dec. 12.
Lion and land critter continued to go at like an episode of Mutual Omaha’s Wild Kingdom this weekend with each studio screaming that they’re No. 1. If you look at the standard 3-day weekend, it’s Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with $38M while Disney’s Mufasa is looking at an estimated $37M. However, on the five-day measure which saw The Lion King prequel rise from the dust on Christmas Day and Dec. 26 in its dailies, Mufasa takes the lead with $63.7M.
Who knew that hedgehogs were predatory creatures that could spring out of the ground and take down the king of the jungle in full? Paramount’s $122M production Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the dominant heading into the Christmas frame with a $62M opening, well ahead of Disney’s $200M prequel Mufasa which is nothing to sing ‘Hakuna Matata’ about with a $35M start.
